psssshh! ... technology ... of couse if they do put it on the PS3 I wouldn't mind ... but, I know I won't be owning a TV that would allow me to appreciate that kind of video quality for a long time. but, It would be cool for general data storage and such.

While this all sounds really nifty, currently, nobody knows which one will be adopted as the industry standard, and quite frankly, I don't want to be stuck in the position of the people who were went with betamax after VHS exploded - out three hundred+ bucks and unable to watch new movies.

It's true, there is still a lot of uncertainty regarding which format will come out on top, but I think the battle will go on for a lot longer than betamax vs VHS. Both companies have quite a few movie titles coming out in their formats, and quite a bit of industrial support as well. I think they'll co-exist for a good while, like SACD and DVD-Audio have been. But in the end, I expect (hope?) blu-ray will win out. It sounds like they have more support in Hollywood... but time will tell, I suppose. IF I were at home with a decent system, and IF I had the funds, I'd go for one of the lower-end models. Sadly, neither of these are the case

I think I will probably end up being one of the late adopters, as I don't think I'll get one until they come down in price to the point where plain old DVD players are today, and the choice will likely hinge on which format carries the movies I care about.

I'd be tempted to go with blu-ray, if the PS3 includes it, which I'm pretty sure it will, that would be a bonus get a new kick-ass gaming machine and a blu-ray player, not that I'm too into playstation and the like, but I've been known to play some x-games every once in a while (remember the game that launched with the psone). I've been hearing that bd players are going to be anywhere from like $500-infinity so if one could get a gaming console at the same time, even if it's like $800 for a ps3, it could likely be worth it(assuming you are going to be spending almost a grand on a bd-dvd player anyway). Another thing though, the prices on the discs themselves, $40 for "A" movie, that is lame. Chances are I'll just be waiting it out still buying dvd's on the cheap, then I'll just get really pissed off when all the movies I bought come out on bd or hd and they'll cost me another $40 just to get the fancy version and I'll have to scrounge up some dough for a player. stupid new formats. It'd be sweet if you could like, trade in old dvd's to get like $10 off the new disc, not likely though. Wow, apparently I've got a lot to say on this subject.

Yeah, it's like how you used to have to buy a new copy of the White Album on LP, eight-track, cassette, and then CD. How many times will we have to buy the Star Wars trilogy?

Really? I was under the impression that blu-ray / HD-DVD discs would cost about $24.. if it really is $40 for a disc, that truly would be lame. To be honest, I haven't ever bought the Star Wars Trilogy, hehe. The Summerson Video Library has always been very accommodating

I was just figuring that the Star Wars trilogy is the video equivalent of the White Album in terms of sheer amount of re-releases and so-called "upgrades." Perhaps Blu-Ray/HD will convince Lucas to release the ORIGINAL original trilogy...

Didn't he already do that just recently? Release the original (non-special-edition) Star Wars trilogy on dvd? I could have sworn he did.

that's what he'd like us to think, he just re-released the special edition again, once more, only now with "ORIGINAL art" sonofabitch

Precisely, and the funny thing is that the newest release of the trilogy actually has fewer special features than the first DVD release.

okay- time to weigh in on this important topic. As of yet, i have no plans to buy a player- i'm still holding out hope for something like the pioneer player that came out a while back... dv47a or something like that (plays sacd and dvd-a). Dual format- oh yeah. I'm hoping that the electronics industry has learned from the last disk based format war and someone will churn out a higher-mid priced player that will do both formats- and do them well. First off- i'm going to see what i can do in terms of displays- i'm looking into projector buying sometime in the next 6 months or so. Likely candidates are the sanyo z4 or panasonic ae900. both are 1280x720. Hopefully by the time i'm ready to buy that and get it going- there will be some sort of market consensus on which format is winning- or a dual format player. I suppose it is a question of how much better the new content will look on a HD capable projector... and sound for that matter. If it does look extra sexy- i'm going to be hard pressed not to buy a new player *Edit* .... after all an entire year? that is a loong time not to buy a new player... especially if there is some compelling movies to be played on it...
